I remember the good ol’ days when I was in Christmas plays (unintentional rhyming…).
At fourteen, I starred in my first Christmas play production. I played a boy. I wiped my nose down my sleeve and everyone winced. I was fantastic.
It was all downhill from there.

I’m still recovering. Still twitching. Still flinching from the imaginary shouts, screams, and high pitched voices in my head. I feel that my hands are sticky, but they’re not. I feel a hand tugging on my skirt, but no one’s there.
It’ s real. It’s over. It’s post traumatic stress syndrome.
It was Vacation Bible School week.
If you don’t know, VBS is a week, Monday through Friday, where kids come to church and we have games, crafts, snacks, and bible lessons. I went to VBS when I was a kid. I’m pretty sure I didn’t miss a year. And now that I’m an adult, I still don’t miss a year.
Now I’m a teacher.

I have a dog named Kiki. She’s a chihuahua, which is mostly why I didn’t want her in the beginning. She wasn’t a yorkie, so I checked out.
My Mom, however, was interested. So one thing led to another and “Goggles” was then at our house — as my mother’s dog.
We barely knew anything about her. My first impression was that she must have part wiener dog in her, for her length and the length of her tail. Other than that, the poor thing was just fixed and looked utterly worn out. She did nothing but sleep, and we weren’t sure she could bark.
One evening, we heard her yapping in her sleep, and we all shared little laughs and said, “she does have a voice!”
It was cute then.
